SEO DOs And DONT’S According To Google: Mixed Signals?

Google is talking a lot about SEO these days. In a recent webmaster discussion at SXSW, Google’s Matt Cutts spoke about some changes Google is working on that would seem to make SEO matter less, in that sites with good, quality content that don’t do a lot of SEO could potentially rank just as well, or better than a bigger site with a bigger SEO budget and a lot of SEO tactics implemented. The whole thing appears to be more about Google getting better at not helping sites just because they employ a lot of grey hat/borderline black hat tactics. Google has always tried to do this, but based on what Cutts said, it sounds like they’re about to get better at it.
Changes to Google’s algorithm have the ability to make or break businesses. Google is sending out the signal that you should worry less about the current SEO trends, and more about producing great content, and that they’re “leveling the playing field” for sites that don’t pay as much attention to SEO. Obviously great content is a positive, but at the same time, Google is showing us each month all of the changes it is making, and all the while, providing tips about how to do certain SEO things better. Is Google sending mixed signals? Just how much should webmasters worry about optimization? Share your thoughts in the comments.
Google Changes To Come
WebProNews spoke with former Googler and Google Webmaster Central creator Vanessa Fox about it, after she wrote her own blog post, sharing her thoughts about Google’s approach to SEO. In her post, she wrote, “Some are worried that Google will begin to penalize sites that have implemented search engine optimization techniques. My thoughts? I think that some site owners should worry. But whether or not you should depends on what you mean by search engine optimization.”
“Matt talked about finding ways to surface smaller sites that may be poorly optimized, if, in fact, those sites have the very best content,” she said in the post. “This is not anything new from Google. They’ve always had a goal to rank the very best content, regardless of how well optimized or not it may be. And I think that’s the key. If a page is the very best result for a searcher, Google wants to rank it even if the site owner has never heard of title tags. And Google wants to rank it if the site owner has crafted the very best title tag possible. The importance there is that it’s the very best result.”
There has been a lot of discussion about it in the SEO community, and there will no doubt be plenty around SES New York this week. Some of the talk has been blown out of proportion, and Cutts appears to feel that the press has contributed to this. For the record, when we first reported on it, we linked to the full audio from the panel, as [...] Continue Reading…

One URL To Rule Them All For Mobile SEO

A core element of mobile SEO is to determine where the mobile content will reside in relation to that of the standard desktop orientated site. This debate was even broached a year ago.
What Are The Mobile SEO URL Options?
Same URL or One URL strategy
An m. subdomain
A third party site for mobile pages
A .mobi TLD
Why Is The One URL Strategy Better For Mobile SEO?
With the large enterprise companies we work with at Covario, our position has been to recommend the one URL or same URL approach over the m. subdomain.
The one URL approach for mobile has also been recently echoed as a preferred choice by both Bing officially and Google unofficially.
This approach requires user agent detection to trigger different rendering of the page based on the mobile device type which can also include the DocType and HEAD section of the code. Google specifically affirmed this is not cloaking back in their Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide.
The key is to change these sections for feature phones and smartphones as Google has two different mobile crawlers for these devices since the search results between feature phones and smartphones do differ from each other, as well as from the standard desktop search engine ranking results.
To be proactive, it is best to do this as well for tablets and TV rendering, which should get specific crawlers from the search engines in the near future.
In the end, why is this single URL approach better for mobile SEO?
Link empowerment since all the link equity would be consolidated into one URL
Mobile URLs rarely have much link equity on their own
A URL being in an m. does not inherently have any advantage in mobile search
Google and Bing have both affirmed its not cloaking to show different content on the same URL for the different mobile device types
There is no need to create a subdomain every time there is a new device type
Results in reduced load on your web server; and
Definitively establishes a direct relationship of the different mobile renderings to your desktop instance
When Is An m. Subdomain A Better Option?
Using a subdomain for your mobile rendering is a close “1B” option to the one URL strategy and could be the preferred direction in many circumstances.
If you are only going to have a limited mobile site that doesn’t have a one-to-one relationship to your desktop instance, then having a subdomain for mobile would make sense.
Also, if your site already has a long established mobile subdomain the advantages of bringing it to the one URL does diminish.
The disadvantage is that you would need to have user agent detection on both your www- desktop instance as well your m. mobile instance to properly redirect the user to the other based on their device.
Then, you would need that user agent detection on the mobile subdomain to trigger different mobile content on the same mobile URL for feature phone and smartphone users.
Finally, you would then need to create a subdomain for each future device thus a tablet. subdomain then a tv. subdomain and possibly in the future a car. subdomain or appliance. [...] Continue Reading…

The Latest & Greatest On SEO Pagination

Technical SEO topics such as pagination are near and dear to my heart. This article will build upon and update my previous treatment of pagination and SEO.
I’ve written and presented often on pagination for SEO. Why so much attention on this subject?
The reason is simple: it can be a big, hairy deal for sites. It’s right up there with faceted navigation as one of the most problematic crawling and indexing issues for large-scale SEO. It’s a tactic (actually a set of tactics) that our teams are continually evolving, testing, and refining.
So it was “double prizes” when Google announced the HTML 5 element rel next/prev for pagination.
3 Overall Tactics For SEO Pagination
There are three primary tactics that we use for SEO pagination:
Classic Method (using noindex)
View All Method
Rel Prev/Next Method
Each of these is detailed below.
Classic Pagination for SEO: Using noindex
I’ve already detailed this technique in full, so I’ll skip the nitty gritty. The important thing to realize is that using this method does not directly transfer any equity from a series of component pages to the primary, canonical page. Rather, as component pages get crawled and link back to the canonical page, that equity is (hopefully) transferred as a second-order effect.
We would generally not recommend using this method for pagination today, except for fringe cases. It’s perfectly fine and will not hurt a site; on the contrary, it will greatly help a site that has SEO pagination problems. But, there are now even better methods as we’ll discover.
The classic SEO pagination method uses noindex but does not directly consolidate equity.
View All Method
The most elegant method is to utilize a View All page. In this approach, all component pages rel canonical back to the View All.
There are a few requirements for this approach:
The View All must load quickly; at least 3 seconds end-to-end. Maile Ohye pointed out at SMX West that even if load times are excessive, if the page can load progressively the user experience will not suffer as much (since content will be viewable on the page immediately).
At SMX West, a few folks complained when I mentioned 3.5 seconds as the maximum load time tolerable for View All pages. The truth is, this is a “real world” goal and while not ideal, reflects the actual load times that we see on large sites.
Just take a look at these ‘last mile’ load times on US retail sites to get an idea of what latency looks like out there. It’s not particularly pretty, but more than anything demonstrates the opportunity these sites have.

Site latency reports from Google Webmaster Tools
Our analysis of 20 top ecommerce clients showed an average load time of just over 4 seconds. The fastest site was averaging 2 second load times, an exceptional result in this set. But it was more common to see load times above 3 seconds and well into the 4 second range. While the average load time was 4.2 seconds, the slowest site loaded in over 9 seconds!
Another requirement for the View All method is to ensure [...] Continue Reading…

Omaha SEO Company Net Success Announces the Launch of Their Pay-Per-Performance Pricing Model for Search Engine …

An Omaha based SEO company, Net Success, is offering SEO services on a pay-for-success basis, significantly reducing the risk which is normally associated with hiring an SEO company.Omaha, NE (PRWEB) March 19, 2012 “If we don’t get your website listed on the first page of Google, we don’t get paid.”
So say’s Larry Dozier, the manager of Net Success, an Omaha SEO company which has recently shifted over to using a pay per performance pricing model for their seo clients.
Many small business owners are hesitant to hire an SEO firm simply because of the degree of uncertainty involved. Most SEO companies charge a large fee upfront, but make no guarantees of success. There’s a strong incentive for the SEO provider to over-promise in order to secure the contract. Additionally, it’s difficult for a business owner to assess the true skill level of the SEO provider, making most company owners reluctant to enter into an SEO relationship.
“That’s where we turn the whole thing upside down” states Dozier. “Instead of placing the risk on the client, we take the majority of the risk upon ourselves. If we don’t succeed in placing your website, we don’t get paid. Period.”
Net Success begins by examining the needs of the prospective client, as well as their own ability to meet those needs.
If Net Success determines that they can successfully place the prospective client’s website for keywords which will bring in substantial traffic, a formal SEO relationship is entered into.
“The entire arrangement hinges upon our ability to deliver real value to the website owner. By value we mean page one Google listings for keywords which generate real traffic and which bring real money in the door.” say’s Dozier. “If your SEO isn’t doing that for you, what good is he?”
The way the Net Success model works is that the website owner pays a one-time activation fee of $199.00. Over the following twelve months, there is an agreed upon monthly fee charged for each keyword for which the site ranks on the first page of Google search results. The monthly fee ranges from $25 to $200 per keyword, depending upon how competitive the keyword is.
At the end of the 12 month period, the site owner has the option to renew.
“If we do our job right, which we will, we anticipate that most clients will be eager to continue the relationship.” Dozier states. “Everything depends on our being an asset for your business, delivering real value – not just sales hype.”

How This Entrepreneur Raised $28,000 To Fund Her Startup, Using Airbnb

Mark Suster

Never Negotiate Piecemeal. Here’s Why
Always Go Home with the Lady Who Brought you to the Dance
Find Egg-breakers: People With Influence and Authority Who Are Unafraid to Use Them

Tracy DiNunzio isn’t your typical Silicon Valley startup founder. She’s a painter and a self-proclaimed Bohemian.
She did her first tech startup after the age of 30. And she didn’t start her company in Northern California.
Tracy built her company, Recycled Media, out of necessity. She hasn’t raised any venture capital. She drove her company to profitability before paying herself a modest salary.
She leveraged herself and even sold many of her possessions to get started. And when her assets were tapped she rented out her bedroom and even her couch on Airbnb to afford her year-one operations. More on that later.
She actually IS the prototypical entrepreneur. Just not the kind you would initially read about on TechCrunch. That may soon change. And that’s what I love about her narrative. It represents the great majority of entrepreneurship and eschews the fairytale rags-to-VC-riches stories we so often read about in the press.
Here’s what I learned about Tracy:
1. She started her business from a personal need Tracy was an artist throughout her 20?s but she watched her then husband found a tech startup. She learned at the kitchen table as so many spouses do. After some encouragement from him she decided to launch her own website – Recycled Bride. This was the first in her string of web properties.
The idea came from having been recently married herself and seeing how expensive it can be to buy a new wedding dress. So many women aspire to wear Vera Wang, but few can really afford the dresses. Weddings are a bit like college degrees – they often set you back financially for many years after the event.
And further, Tracy felt the calling to try to build something “green.” Recycled Bride became the perfect endeavor: Less [...] Continue Reading…
